How to begin a more self sufficient lifestyle…where to start?

power_of_choice

Lets take a look at the typical lifestyle today. Our lifestyle in America commonly is centered around taking care of the things that are urgent, and we have no time left over to take care of the things that are important. This leads to an unsustainable cycle of “chronic crisis” . This is a foundational place to start making a change before we move on to the larger crisis that are largely out of our control . However, this is just a symptom of a larger problem. Lets take a look.

Living beyond our means:
Living beyond our means is usually associated with finance but it affects every area of our life. Lets take, for example, our time. ” I just never have enough time!” is something we think to ourselves quite often. Lets pretend that we could invent a machine that would create more time for us to take care of the important things in life. What if we could press a button and create time to get the rest that our bodies need, time to nurture our children , and time to contemplate our life and plan for our future. We could plant a garden, get to know our neighbors, build community. Think of the impact that would have on not just our lives, but the lives of our families, our nation, our world. With the reduced stress, many of our heath care problems would be solved , perhaps crime would drop. It would be a revolution!

But we have forgotten one detail. “The power of choice.”

Strangely enough, this revolution has come and gone, and though many things are better, the things I described above are in large part, worse. The industrial revolution gave us the automobile ,so we could save time traveling, the washing machine ,so we did not have to spend time cleaning each garment by hand, and the microwave oven gives us time at the push of a button. We have the cellular phone , the computer and the internet. The list goes on and on. All these things were created to free up our time, yet we, as a whole, are busier and more stressed than we were 100 years ago . We have filled up all this additional time with things that don’t improve our health, don’t improve our families or communities and don’t add to what is truly valuable in our lives.

How do you eat an elephant?
We did not get to this point in our society overnight and we will not change overnight. Evaluate what is really important to you. Make small changes and do it slowly . Learn to say no . Start letting go of things that drain your time and money. Live within your means . Build up margins and surpluses in your time and money. Take care of yourself first, so that you have the resources to take care of others. Invest in the right people, so that you can mutually support each other. But most of all, invest in you! Build on this foundation , and then you can start to prepare for the situations that are out of your control. The first steps are changes in your mind, and then the choices you make. Soon , you will be able to harness the power of choice! And the answer to the question of how do you eat an elephant . it’s simple, one bite at a time!
