    Thank you, I’m amazed at how people love to criticize, but many of them have not tried to produce their own show like this. Or if they have, they’re usually not very successful, with few exceptions.

    I just have to say something, Jack Spirko hardly invented the idea of communicating survival information. Giving him credit for using the “ant and grasshopper” analogy is silly. I can not remember a Preparedness Expo a decent firearms show where SOMEONE giving a lecture did not use the story. I give Jack credit for making a bumper sticker of it though. The use of the words “modern survival” date back much further than the internet. I heard Howard Ruff use the phrase in the 70’s and Ragnar Bensen, Dr Bruce Clayton, Kurt Saxon, Cord Troebst, Joel Skousen, Duncan Long, Mel Tappen, and other “survivalism” greats, have used the term. What Jack is doing is nothing new. Survival shows have been on every type of media, including the internet. Podcasts are just a new thing, his info is nothing new. It is nice to hear him focus on debt reduction (something that Howard Ruff made a career of years ago) and gardening (again been done many many times) but it is hardly original. IMHO Jack is just too hard to listen to, his high pitched voice grates a bit on the nerves as well as his fake Texas accent that does nothing to disguise his northern one. I commend Jack for his efforts, putting info out there for people is a good thing. His advice is usually solid as well. I just can not listen to him for any length of time.

    I like Bob and Randy’s podcast. It’s as solid as anything else I have listened to including shows on shortwave radio, public access television, videos, and in print. Again the message is not different, just the medium in which it is delivered (podcasting). Hell even Jack did not invent the survival themed podcast, I can think of two offhanded that predated Jack’s show, his is just more successful. He is a salesman and probably a good one, and his show reflects his ability to sell his ideas. However his “modern survival philosophy”, his ideology, and his liberal leanings do not reflect the ideas/philosophy of me or mine. Course I am only a small part of a much larger group of survival people who have been at it for decades.

    For all you critics of this show I say “phhhbbtttttttt”. Be a fan of Jack’s show, it’s a interesting podcast. Just remember that “fan” is short for fanatic and ya’ll fit that definition. Let Bob alone and let the man broadcast what he pleases. It’s free, it’s fun, and there is hardly any infringement on material. Ya’ll may think Jack invented survivalism, but if you actually do some research, you will find there is nothing new in what he has to say.

    @word warrior,

    Again making a rated G version is commendable but it doesn’t make things original. The tag line that was here yesterday and the twitter handle to me were both over the top.

    All I am saying is either

    1. Become original and stop mimicking TSP

    or

    2. Credit the creator of some very original concepts and methods

    As a “church going man” concerned about things like course language that would be the right thing to do. There is a thread over at TSP about this now. Jack commented and said it isn’t a bit deal but you could tell he feels a bit slighted by how blatant this whole thing really is. He is a better man then I am as well, he said just like I thought he would that he would even be wiling to help Bob.

    Remember to keep prepping if times get tough………….

  4. Sister Wolf says:

    I’m not so concerned about the podcast, honestly. If you’re good at what you do, you’ll get a following. If you’re not, you won’t. That’s pretty much the bottom line there. But the fact that you’ve taken “ModernSurvival” as your Twitter handle is beyond wrong. You knew it was Jack’s handle, and you snagged it anyhow (or perhaps BECAUSE of that fact, trying to get more listeners). It makes one wonder about the integrity of the host when you do stuff like that.

    If I were you, I’d seriously consider finding an original name for your Twitter handle. That’s the only red flag that I see, though. The rest of your show is good – even if it is “inspired” *cough*COPIED*cough* from TSP. Your voice is very different from Jack’s, and you’ve got a few different viewpoints. There’s nothing wrong with a little free-market competition.

    As a regular listener to Today’s Survival Show, I appreciate your comments, TimS. I would also like to thank Mr. Spirko for the service that he is providing his community and to the world. He has done an outstanding job of articulating the value of the principles taught to us by our grandparents, and in that respect, I wish him continued success. He has much content that is very original and uniquely as such as his development of permaculture techniques. Suffice it to say, I recommend his show, but not to my friends at church, most of my family, and younger listeners, as his language can become quite course at times. I hope that you will continue to listen. I am quite keenly interested in the shows Bob has done on buying used firearms, internet gun purchases, and home security. I think you will find the content to be quite original as Bob has extensive experience in many of the topics in which he speaks about on his podcasts. Also check out the guest bloggers who have shared their professional wisdom on bartering and home protection. Regards,

    I am sorry but the absolute copy of the formula and core principles is clear. Also just two days ago your tag line was not just strengthen your resolve it was “Strengthen Your Resolve if Times Get Tough” and then I made a post and you removed “if times get tough”. Please tell me you are not going to deny that. If you deny that then you show me that my comments are pointless because your motivation will be clear. Right now I am giving you the benefit of the doubt.

    Doing a rated G version of TSP doesn’t make it original. Actually your response bugs me more then your site and podcast itself. It is one thing to imitate a person it is another to be called on it and start denying it.

    The man clearly did more then “inspire you” you have methodically copied his philosophy, his formula, his key principles, his analogies, etc. I emailed Spirko and he basically said he didn’t really care so I guess I shouldn’t either. Yet to me you are purely an imitator, a different topic is not being original.

  7. TimS, let me also add that…yes, Mr. Spirko did in part inspire me to create this show and he has branded the concept of taking old principles that our parents and grandparents taught us, and brought them into our life today. What he teaches is 2-3 generations of practical living. I don’t think he’s the originator of most of it. Having said that, MY BRAND is family survival. My show can be listened to, by any member of your family, even kids. If you listen to some of my other episodes you will hear that I appeal a lot to young people and I will continue to do so. You will not hear any profanity whatsoever on my show. Randy Croft and I have also produced a lot of very original content in our episodes on “home defense” and “buying a used handgun and buying online.” So we are creating our own brand. I appreciate you listening and hope you continue to do so. Your experience is quite valuable since you’ve been doing it for so long. I bet you have a lot to add and we would appreciate any and all comments you have on any specific topics, or suggestions of new topics I’ve not yet covered. Thanks again, all the best. 8. Todays Survival Host says:

    TimS, again thanks for listening. I’m trying to portray preparedness and survival as mainstream because it is and shouldn’t be thought of as something extreme. I used Modern Survival as a twitter handle to portray that. Bullet points used as show notes are used by a lot of people who publish podcasts and blogs and even recommended by WordPress developers. “Strengthen your resolve” has been my tagline for quite some time, before that it was “Helping you Harness the Power of Choice,” which is how I open my show. Your comments are appreciated.

    Thank you,

  9. TimS says:

    Hey I just checked out your twitter, come on dude you even ripped off the man’s forum handle “ModernSurvival”. I notice you at least changed your tag line. Personally I think you are going to have to get some more originality to make this thing fly.

  10. TimS says:

    @Host,

    Don’t get me wrong I like what you are doing, I bet Jack would as well, you might want to reach out to him honestly. That said I have been a prepper since about 77 like many older folks it was the nuclear threat that got me started. I have been to workshops, I have been in some of the first usergroups on survival on the net (before there were forums) etc. and much of what Jack teaches is very original. Such as

    1. Survivalism is about a better life when nothing goes wrong
    2. Order of threat probability based on area of effect
    3. How the grasshopper and ant applies (never head this in survival context before Jack)
    4. The entire terminology of “modern survival philosophy”

    I would expect a lot of overlap by any podcaster in this niche but those things are core to Spirko’s brand. If you are going to use them fine but hell credit the man as the originator when you do. Again though that is just my opinion. Given you are doing something positive in the world I sure Jack won’t even care.

    Even your first 30 seconds of each show and your show notes format is following the guys formula. Again just my opinion. I also want to say some of your topics seem very cool and I am going to keep listening to you and Jack both. Just my view that’s all.

  11. Todays Survival Host says:

    Well, thank you for listenting to my show. You are certainly entitled to comment and inject your own opinion. And yes, you are correct, Jack Spirko is one of the people who inspired me to create this Blog and my show (along with my mentor.) I do the best I can to differentiate myself with my own take on modern survivalism. There are many people who have knowledge to share in this field and as you can see I’ve created a link to his show also. I did so before I started producing podcasts.

    Thank you for your comment and I’m glad you are a dedicated survivalist.

  12. TimS says:

    One man’s opinion? Well here is another man’s opinion your show sounds a lot like Jack Spirko’s show, “The Survival Podcast”. I mean way like it so much so that the odds you are not a listener of his show seem very slim. I am sure Mr. Spirko wouldn’t mind but as one of his oldest listeners if you are going to almost exaclty copy a guy’s style you could at least some how give him some credit or something. I know what Jack will say when he finds out, something to the effect of well great, tell the guy to get in touch and I will help him promote his show. But on my end I think you have ripped off Spirko’s formula and claimed it as your own.

  13. D. White says:

    Good start. I know & see a lot of Sheepole everyday, lets hope they turn into wolves (well disciplined) someday soon. Keep up the good work.
